Missions
Locally we support the following organizations and programs:
Our youth participate yearly in summer mission work in the USA. Internationally, we are involved in summer mission work with AMOS in Nicaragua, an organization that provides medical care and ministry to people in rural Nicaragua. We also have a Mission Scholarship Fund available that financially assists our members on mission trips in the USA and abroad. Pleasant Valley ShelterThe Pleasant Valley Shelter is located on Pittsburgh’s North Side and serves an average of 35 homeless men. Once a month, members of the North Hills Community Baptist Church prepare a meal for the shelter. We travel as a group and serve the men in the evening. On special occasions we collect warm clothing accessories like hats and gloves for the residents. Throughout the year, we donate travel size toiletry items such as soap and shampoo. The service is funded through our general mission outreach and with privately donated items. NicaraguaSince 2001, we have traveled to Nicaragua for ten days each summer. In conjunction with our American Baptist missionaries, Dr. Gustavo Parajon and David and Laura Parajon, we have provided help to rural villages throughout the country that lack health care. It is a concrete enanctment of Matthew 25:31-46. Mission Trips
The purpose is to give our youth hand-on mission experiences in different locations and environments, as well as fellowship with other Christian young people and a sense of teamwork as they work to help those less fortunate than themselves. The cost of the trip varies between $200 and $300. The youth are given opportunities throughout the year to earn a portion or the entire cost of their trip. Scholarships are available to those who qualify. Special OfferingsThroughout the year, our mission committee collects four special offerings. These offerings further the work of Christ and support our cooperative ministries as American Baptists. These offerings are America for Christ, One Great Hour of Sharing, World Mission Offering, and the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering. These four offerings assist in inviting others to new life in Christ, making disciples, meeting the needs of the many and saying “thank you” to those who have faithfully served the Lord as pastors and missionaries. Servant EvangelismIn 2000, our church began a local emphasis called “Servant Evangelism”. Servant evangelism is a simple, straightforward approach to sharing God’s love in simple, practical ways. It was begun in 1984, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Founding pastor Steve Sjogren and several people from the Vineyard Community Church loaded up bags of groceries and bought Christmas trees and took them to housing projects on the north side of Cincinnati. Out of this action was born a vision to reach the city of Cincinnati and the world by serving others with no strings attached. Here at North Hills we have given out free water, free Cokes, carnations, newspapers and other items. While freely giving the items, we attempt to engage others in conversation. The most frequently asked question is, “Why are you doing this?” That allows us to speak to them of the love of Christ and what it means to us and to the world. Often someone will say, “Nothing’s free.” We respond, “Only the love of Jesus Christ!”
