Hymn of the Week: Blest Be The Tie That Binds

Hymn of the Week: Blest Be The Tie That Binds

Greetings to my NHCBC family! This week we are focusing on the sequel to the book of Luke: Acts. Specifically, Acts 2: 42-47 where the utopic fellowship of believers is described. I must admit that every time I find myself in this part of the NT, my first reaction is “Really?!” (add sarcastic undertone). I then go down the sceptical path of trying to apply my reality with what I read. And then I remind myself that we as God’s people are bound to heavenly ways not earthly ways.

This week we will partake in communion. Communion has two core components: thanksgiving and anamnesis or the “re-calling” or “re-presenting” of this event (Webber 1994, Worship: Old and New). Communion is where we intersect with our ancestors and each other no matter the distance between us. It’s also where heaven and earth touch and where we are one with our Risen Savior through the Holy Spirit and the Father that has given us this gift. We end our re-presenting of the Lord’s Supper with “Blest Be the Tie That Binds”, a song of thanksgiving and anamnesis. We are taken out of our reality for that moment and are truly part of that first church described by Luke. It does exist! Thanks be to God!
