Hymn of the Week: How Firm a Foundation

Hymn of the Week: How Firm a Foundation

Greetings my NHCBC family! “How Firm a Foundation” has a rich history that testifies to the reoccurring theme of unity through diversity because Christ is our edifice. In many ways, this song echos Peter’s words that we are gathered as a chosen people even though we rejected our Redeemer. God is always seeking us out and bringing us together. Even now!

The first verse is a question of self-reflection: “Saints, the ones that have been lifted up to stand on God’s foundation: What else do you need other than the Lord?” The last verse answers the first verse: “God is my rock and my redeemer. No plan of hell and no person can break this bedrock that I along with my brothers and sisters rest upon”.

We are the bricks that are laid upon the grace, mercy and love of our Creator. In many ways, the Spirit-inspired words of this hymn is the mortar that joins us together. We are all different but all are essential in the kingdom.
