Recently, in the NY Times, columnist Russ Duothat wrote, “Many people… don’t believe that history really has an Author. But I do.” In the end, this is the philosophical and theological debate that dominates our era. Charles Taylor, in his book, “The Secular Age” says that until the 1500’s it was not possible not to believe in God. Since the Enlightenment, it is not possible to believe in God. Paul belongs to the former age. It is our misfortune to live in an age in which the dominant belief is that there is not Author. Paul tells our story this morning. Faith, strong, durable faith, has never been more necessary.
